I read an article in the June/July/Aug '99 issue of Ceramics Monthly by
Nesrin During about making a small wood fired raku kiln. The March '01 is=
sue
(in the "Questions" section) also had a reference to this article. I woul=
d
like to give this a try. My question is about the bricks used. Nesrin use=
s
"porus insulating" bricks to build this kiln. Does this mean soft brick? =
I
have a supply of hard brick and am wondering if those will work.

Yes it means softbrick and yes you probably could use
your hard brick but it would take you longer. You may
try to get a hold of Bill Gossman--New London Art
Center (Minnesota) should be able to find him for you.
Or try New London, Minnesota directory. He built a
woodfired raku kiln. Pretty knowledgeable guy, more
than most of us put together.

Dear Marge,
I used hard brick for my wood burning kiln. It is mentioned in Steve
Branfman's new raku book.
I also used a fiber lined barrel for the firing chamber.
The hard brick for the fire box area.
