who suggests amd who decides where NCECA will be held?

Millie in MD, in the rain. I vote for Baltimore, 20 minutes from my house
and
lots of galleries, museums, and colleges here.

NCECA 2004 will be in San Antonio, Texas.

Connell, James D. on mon 16 apr 01

The site of the 2004 NCECA conference has not been established. San
Antonio has been removed from the list of potential sites. Many sites
are being considered including Baltimore, Indianapolis, and Pittsburgh.

What about Odessa, TX?
We have a couple of no-tell-mo-tells and a shit load of drinking
establishments. No much on the conference side, but we could use the rod=

As I understand it, the choice of where to hold NCECA depends partially on
finding a city that has the appropriate facilities, and it has to do with
finding a university willing to act as on-site hosts/coordinators.
Combining those two requirements does complicate matters. It is an enormous
responsibility for those who decide to host NCECA, and it is not like there
are people lining up out there to do the job.
Best wishes -

Too true, Vince. Several people have suggested they have it in Seattle,
and that's one of the reasons it's never been here. But that's not all.
There are a couple of other requirements that make it difficult to find
a place, especially since NCECA has gotten as big as it has.
First, you also need about 1000 hotel rooms in reasonable distance from
an exhibition hall big enough to hold the commercial and non-profit
booths. And since none of the three groups of people who attend
(potters, students, and teachers) have much money, the rooms need to be
relatively cheap. It has gotten rare to find a hotel with enough room
for everybody, so you need to get (usually) a deal from more than one
hotel close together. Not easy. And one of those hotels needs to have
a ballroom big enough for 3000 people at once, and plenty of smaller
meeting rooms.
Then there are the shows. This year and last there were about 60 or so
shows associated with NCECA. Very few cities have that many galleries,
so it means finding other venues- banks, libraries, schools, etc.
So it's nice to speculate on where they might hold NCECA, but it's not
as easy as you might think. There are tons of cities that have a
wonderful atmosphere and would be a fun place to have it, but not many
places that have the school, the cheap hotel rooms, the galleries, and
someone willing to do the work.

What about Austin, Texas? I hear it's a beautiful town with lots of
character, great live music venues, and awesome Texas Style BBQ (yes, even us
Southern Californians have heard of the infamous "Salt Lick" restaurant). I
would imagine a town of this size could support NCECA easily. (never been
there myself... yet anyway)

Why don't you guys come to beautiful Northern Arizona?  We have Northern Arizona University, home of an incredible Noborigama kiln, and a very nice Anagama.  By then we will have a Japanese Tea Garden around the kilns, we have a luscious ponderosa pine forest, sacred peaks, and historic Route 66 going through town with a gazillion motels and hotels along it.  We are less than two hours north of Phoenix, an hour away from Grand Canyon, and just above the beautiful high desert southwest.  For any interested, Sedona's vortex is a hop skip and a jump, and some of the most beautiful red rocks you ever saw.  You can drive a short distance and stand in a volcano crater, climb in Ruins, or check out the Painted Desert.  NAU has the SkyDome, and a Hotel/Restaurant program that even has a Restaurant/Inn on Campus...  Lots of potential, I'd say.  We have an extra bedroom for whoever
might need one, and you are welcome!  Woohoo!  Come on over!

They did have NCECA there in '73 or so. And it snowed in between sunny
periods! I loved it.

Could anyone please tell me where to find the information to propose being a
presenter at NCECA? I've looked on the site and can't seem to find any info
about proposals.

Thank you.

Or, you could email me, Gail Phillips (figglywig@att.net), and I could =
call
around locally for you. I live here in Indy, about six miles south of
downtown. If you want to stay at my house, I have room for a few people =

spare bedroom with a queen size bed, and a large family room (39 X 22) =
with
a fold-down futon couch in it. I have three cats, so you can't be =
allergic
or hate 'em, and right now, my shower is in the basement, but I am =
working
on my main floor bathroom to get it done sometime in this eon. Maybe =
some of
you could help me figure out how to fire the gas kiln I built in my
backyard. I have never done it, because I am a big chicken. I really =
don't
want to blow my bedroom off of my house. If I can help in any way for =
NCECA
2004, please let me know.
