A friend has a bunch of bricks for sale. They are hardbrick but seem =
lighter than normal and are off-white in color. They are stamped =
"ALFRAX B101". Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Greg,

I searched at Google [http://www.google.com] and found some information
about Alfrax, but nothing about B101 bricks.

here: http://www.chempros.com/knowledgebase/albumin.htm I saw this:
Alfrax. TM for a series of refractory products composed principally of
electrically fused aluminum oxide grain. Available as bonded refractories
and refractory cements. Used as furnace linings

This material APPEARS to be manufactured by a company called Saint-Gobain.
Evidently they make a number of types of kiln furniture. Perhaps they could
provide you with more solid information.
Here are some dealers in North America:

good luck...

Matt

Greg,

I've never heard of ALFRAX B101, but you may have some high silica brick on
your hands. Do they have chunks of a white aggragate in them. Typically
hard brick weighs 7-9 pounds a piece for a standard 2.5x4.5x9. Silica based
brick weigh less and used in industry for large car kilns that are fired to
temp and held for a lenghthy period..not a cycling brick. They have an
incredible expansion/contraction reate. You may want to fire a couple uder
stress a few times to stoneware temps under load and see if there are any
signs of significant spalling.

Beware and Good Luck
