granular ilmenite

Is there a problem with obtaining ilmenite? I just got a catalog update
from Ceramic Supply of NY/NJ and I see they aren't listing granular ilmenite
or powdered ilmenite. I looked in the archives and I see a question from
Ron Aubuchon about obtaining powdered ilmenite, but I don't see any answers.
We use granular in several glazes. Is there a supply problem?

Thanks much.
Holly

Holly,

I received a few e-mails from fellow clayarters about obtaining some true
"black powdered ilmenite". I e-mailed, called and checked with several
suppliers and most informed me that ilmenite, for pottery purposes, was no
longer being mined. Some suppliers had granular ilmenite in stock. As for
powdered ilmenite (black) there seems to be none available. I've even
received some samples but the powdered ilmenite is brown in color and
dosen't fire out like the real stuff. I know that Krueger Pottery in St.
Louis http://www.kruegerpottery.com has granular ilmenite but not powdered.
Hope this was of some help.

Ron Aubuchon

I hear it has not been available for a while now.
personally i look at it like sour grapes.
the glazes i used it in worked best when screened through at least a 100
mesh sieve. most of my granular illmenite seemed to screen right out, so i
got to thinking about how much i really used. faced with ball mill some
granular or test it without the ill, i chose the latter
I was happy. best wishes, and sorry if theirs some out that I dont know
about, but again, as far as i know, its been mia for some time.

It's odd because if you do a google search on ilmenite, scads of things come
up about mining it in Australia, Africa, Canada, US - it doesn't seem hard
to find, and it seems that it is actively mined in quite a few places. I
guess it is the form that potters use that may not be processed.

I have a glaze which calls for granular ilmenite. I do not mix it into the
glaze because when screening the glaze, the ilmenite remains in the sieve.
I use a damp brush to pick up some of the ilmenite and brush it unto the
glazed surface to give it some interest. US Pigment Corporation sells
ilmenite.
