two things:

many glaze names have old history attached to them.

such as:

ka kee, or kakhi, that americans think is a
color of `gap` pants. tan.

the japanese word ka kee means persimmon. a wonderful
fruit the color of brown/red. words and glaze names do not
travel very well either.

i had a perfect example hit me in the face yesterday.

went past a small gift shop...the window was full of fountains..
local i would guess.

bowls with pie crust wave edges, the inner fountains were
large penis shapes....and i mean real penis shapes....that
ugly spiral throwing of a real amateur. sharlene just gasped
in horror....`is that what i think it is?, my god, how awful`.
and they were awful. made our faces red, not the penis, the
pots.
all were glazed in a rich `floating blue`. 100 bucks each.
bet they sell.

mel,
you haven't lived til you've thrown a penis ON PURPOSE at your local
community center pottery studio, where everybody sees everyTHING that comes
thru.
My friend Jeff wanted that shape for his cremation urn. I made a tall
cylinder w/ appropriate shaped flare at top, and a bowl w/ no foot ring
turned upside down on top. When Jeff dies, the bowl will either be fired in
place (w/ him inside) or glued down.

Scene from community center when I was trimming said piece:

Older guy throwing at standing wheel: "Did you mean for that to look like
a..."
Me, interrupting: "Yup. Customer asked for it."
Older guy makes face and walks away shaking head.
