terra sig waste

Anita,

>> I teach middle school and we do a pitfiring each year. I use Vince
Pitelka's directions for terra sig - specific gravity, the whole nine yards
(great tie-in to the science curriculum) but we don't mix our own clay, so
have no use for the "leftovers." Its killing me to throw this stuff away!
Any suggestion? <<

Yes, I turn the waste left over from my white sig into a white slip that can
be applied to bisque.

Dump the waste into a larger container. Mix it ALOT to get it suspended
again. This will be a lot of work. Then add a LOT of epsom salts. This will
keep it in suspension. Apply to bisque, experiment, have a ball. You can
apply it really thick too, make texture.

I dump my terra sig waste into my Raku recycling bucket. In the long run it
is a small amount compared to the amt. of clay that is mixed in.

I also wondered if it can be allowed to thicken and used to dip paper for a
paper saggar? Nita

if you use EPK for your terra sig.. how about adding 25% soda ash and use it
as a "substitue Terra Sig"...........? Jim in Denton.

Jim -
Could you please elaborate on this? How would you get a useable product by
taking the coarse residue from making kaolin terra sig and overloading it
with a huge amount of soluble flux?
Best wishes -

Vince

He may be referring to the "instant sig" that we also used to use before you
brought us into "the light".

The "instant sig" formula is 3 parts EPK, 1 part soda ash and presto, it's ready to
apply to green ware. For you folks out there that are too lazy or too busy or too
scared to make the "real thing" then you might try this formula for a start. It's
simple, it's instant, and it is an imitation (well, a poor one) of true "dyed in
the wool" lip smacking terra sig.

I have to agree with you, Vince..... the old sludge in the bottom of the sig.
bucket is worth.... sludge. Return it to the earth from whence it came...

Oh Charlie, Oh Vince,

>> I have to agree with you, Vince..... the old sludge in the bottom of the sig. bucket is worth.... sludge. Return it to the earth from whence it came..

Take off the blinders and BELIEVE!. That sludge plus a lot of epsom
salts is one of the Holy Grails of pottery. A slip you can use THICK
and can apply to bisque.

I've got some new pots up on my gallery page a www.mypots.com that prove
it. Look at the spiral plate. And the cups that Vince lusts after are
this slip inlayed into a rolled pattern on the bisqued cups. I'll be
bringing some of these cups to NCECA for the mug exchange, the cup sale,
for some special people (I have a very special pair for Ron) and to
trade.

I'd love to come by and visit with you and Linda again but I'm heading
straight to the Penland area after NCECA. Hope to see you at NCECA.
