Sorry, I know I'm taking more than my share of space today, but I promise
not to make it a habit!

I finally have a website, and I would appreciate feedback any of you might
have.

Here is the address:

http://www.cadit.com/mey/calloo.htm

I'd like to thank Carrie Jacobson for the suggestions that she has made on
the list about page design. I tried to follow these, Carrie, so I hope
you'll look to see how I did. Also, Jennifer Boyer, the order form on your
site was helpful, and Helen Bates, your list of clayarters' websites was
also useful.

That's all for me for today!

Hi Mary

Good first try on your web site.

I took a look at your site and tripped over a couple things I thought
I'd mention.

The link for Cookie stamps from the home page doesn't find the
document, Order page either....order page seems to be trouble on a
couple other pages also.

I did get to it through the gallery page so that link is correct.

Often servers are case sensitive or you just have the addresses of the
links wrong.

The image on the About Me page produces an error for me....no image
found.

Thought you would like to know.

Hi Mary Ella - The website is quite nice! It loads quickly, it is elegant in
its simplicity, and it's easy to navigate - hallelujia!

Two small points - where you explain who is in the photo, can you say
whether you are on the right or the left? I don't know!

And put some more work on there - I'd love to see more vases, mugs, bowls!

I think you have shown how a nice, clean site can work. Good luck with it.

Hi everyone

I finally have a website up after thinking about it for a couple of years. I
had the help of Denise from our studio who is a computer guru. I scanned the
slides and designed the site and she did the first go-round of html coding.
I'm learning HTML and am able to do revisions and additions.

I'd like to know if it loads ok on the various computers out there and is
easy enough to navigate - and if anyone has suggestions for making it look
better. Well, I guess maybe take a look at my pots while your at it. I have
some new work that I have to get slides of and put on there soon. Denise
will make me do that - she's a good teacher, makes me do the work.

The website is: www.conniechristensen.com (not very original but it's easy
for me to remember).

Hi, Connie. The website loaded just fine on my computer here on Cape Cod. A
very nice site, and lovely pots, too. Thanks for sharing.

often have problems with sites on this tube. yours
came up immediately with no delay moving between the
wonderful images. i only wished that there was
information about purchasing your work. i hope to
someday have a site so stunning. rebecca

Connie,
Your website is stellar and flows nicely with your work- warm elegant,
and very fine and professional. I just signed your guestbook, but hit the
enter key during an edit before I finished. Ooops! At any rate, I am going to be
in Denver this Wednesday, and was wondering if I might stop by for a visit, if
you have time. Your work is eyecandy, I must say!

Connie, the first word out of my mouth was "beautiful" when I went to
your site (I was speaking to my toddler who is currently sitting on the
floor.) The pots are gorgeous. The site was easily navigated, though I did
have to close the windows when I clicked on the images in your gallery
rather than being able to just use the "back" button on my browser (SBC
dsl).
Everything loaded quickly and easily. The more vertically oriented forms
did not display on a single screen requiring minimal scrolling rather than
being able to see the entire detailed image.
Love your work and site!

Check out my new website: www.windancerstudio.com

Does anyone know of some inexpensive software that does not require html
knowledge that I can us to update this site? I want to change text and update the
pictures in the gallery.

You could use Front Page Express, the Microsoft WYSIWYG (what you see is what
you get) editor. Its frequently included with your installation of Windows.

The only problem with WYSIWYG is that WYS-sometimes isn't-WYG. Front Page can
insert HTML that only Microsoft Internet Explorer understands ... so that any
one using Netscape won't see the page the way you designed it.

I strongly encourage anyone who has a website to learn some basic HTML. The
"HTML for Dummies" book is a good start. There is a wonderful, and free(!),
HTML editor called Arachnophilia (http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/) that
you can use to maintain your site.

Teresa, exquisite work!!!! Lovely site :) I have a question for you (sorry,
I can't answer your question about the html) Do you take your own pictures for
your website, what camera did you use, and how many megapixels? I really like
the very dark background against your beautiful pieces, they really stand out
with the light hitting them and the colors.

Thanks!

RE: FrontPage
Somehow I (dummy) managed to
use FrontPage to make a web site.
I wanted it simple and to spotlight my work
with no bells and whistles. One of these days
I'll get my daughter to make a fantabulous web site
for me but for now I am happy with my results.

The only problem I have with FrontPage is only using it
once or twice a year I have to remember
how to use it. I need the "Memory for Dummies"
book! Forget the manual.... who has time to go through
3 inches of text!!! I just bumble my way through it just like
I bumble my way through life....eventually everything works out!

Regarding this, I have a proposition to make.

My daytime job is in graphic design. My spare time goes into pottery and
sometimes other crafts. I used to work solely with web design a couple of
years ago, but it was debilitating to sit in front of the monitor all day.
Now, I hardly design anything for the web anymore.

But, I really would like to "have made" a few more website designs for my
portfolio. But I need someone/something to do it for.

I'm more than willing to do an entire website for absolutely free,
provided its owner takes care of server space, and all the rest. I will
also help out with undestanding the HTML enough so that the owner can
change details or add content easily, if I'm unavailable. If anyone would
be interested in this, you can look at some sites that I have made
previously, and that I keep running.

Ok - so here I am again, "The OpenOffice Zealot", but I have to mention that
the OpenOffice suite includes a wysiwyg html generator. I haven't used it
for building websites, prefering the old fashined way myself. However, I
have used it to send documents to people when I didn't know what file format
they could open. This is particularly cool with spreadsheets - just save as
an html document, keep your formating, but practically everyone is able to
view it in their web browser. Also, Openoffice is an open source project -
as a result, it is rather sensitive to maintaining compatability across
operating systems, and between the various browsers out there. It's also free.

If you would like to try it, see the link and instructions contained in this
message:

Hi all.

I was inspired by Logan's post about her new website and this morning
decided to try my hand at creating a simple site of my own
(http://home.earthlink.net/~jessieadair/index.html). I don't have
*any* skills at doing this and was helped along by Earthlink's (my
Internet Service Provider) Trellix tutorial to get me started.

I'd appreciate any comments or questions!

Hi all!

I finally managed to get my website up and going. Actually, since I put it
together on the Mac with iWeb, I was able to do it in just a couple of
hours, not counting the time to take pictures of the pots. It's just that
overcoming inertia thing that I have a problem with.

I still have some tweaking to do, but the basics are there. Take a look
and let me know whatcha think!

David, your web site is nice. I especially like all of the information you
give with your photos. Your photos load inconsistently, though- waves and
laminage loaded very slowly (and I do have DSL, albeit relatively slow DSL),
and the quality in the arcadia images is pretty low, although they loaded
quickly! That is the tradeoff. I would suggest using "interlaced" jpegs, as
that allows your picture to appear to fade in so your viewer can get a
preview to know if they want to stay and look at the more detailed photo.
Also, you are wasting precious load time on those layered electric blue
frames, as well as space for your pots! If it were mine, I'd get rid of the
picture frames altogether. It solves the distraction problem, the close up
problem, and part of the load time problem...

The font in the navigation frame is a little small, but it works because
there are a lot of links there. It might be better to just have your top
frame with the 4 categories, and have them link to sub-index pages, and have
all the smaller links on the sub-index pages. That would free up some space,
because the main frame with all the photos & information is quite small with
both the side and top frames. I guess it's just a matter of taste, though,
whether folks would prefer a small main frame and all the links in the
navigation frame, or to have to go through more layers to get where they
want to go.

Finally- change your page title to reflect what your page is (the title
appears in the top bar of your browser, and is currently the same as the
name of your file, index). That's important if you want to be indexed by
search engines. You were the first link when I searched "david hewitt" in
google, though, so obviously you're doing something right.

Good work, and thanks for putting all this information up there. I really
love it when people mention their websites on clayart (or put them in their
signatures) because it's so nice to see people's work as one gets to know
them via the list.
