To not make your own wheel is something like not making your own pots. No
different. If you feel like making your own wheel, do it. But if you are doing it
to end up with a better than commercial product, the best road might be to start
with a commercial product.

A homemade wheel is a work of art as is a homemade pot.

If you are trying to save money however there are usually better ways than
expressing your self through the making of tools.

BTW i have a wheel that I built, some of it is salvage, The wheel can be set up so
that it bounces up and down 1/4 " five times per revolution, in the same places
each revolution. Throws wobbly pots. I learned that shaking my hands is a better
way to get the same wobbles.
Built when I wasn't an academic.
