> Dear Mr. Gaydos,
> Thank you for your inquiry. The craft collection was formed in 1993 when
the Clinton's decided to honor "The Year of American Craft." It was clear
to artists and donors that the display in the White House was limited to
1993. "The White House Collection of American Craft" opened as an
exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 1995, and went on to
ten cities in the United States. The Smithsonian American Art Museum and
its Renwick Gallery have no curatorial oversight responsibilites related to
this collection.

> These craft works are property of the National Archives, division of
Presidential Libraries. This is standard procedure for objects related to a
particular President's initiatives. This craft collection is currently in
Little Rock, Arkansas, with the exception of several pieces Mrs. Clinton
left on display at the White House. When the Clinton Presidential Library
opens, the collection will be on view there, in its intended home.

Renwick Gallery--"USA Clay" is on view March 9 - July 15, 2001. "USA Clay"
is the second exhibition in a series that focuses on a specific medium in
the expanding craft collection of the museum. The exhibition features 95
ceramic artworks by 87 artists, ranging from functional wares to conceptual
sculptures to folk art to works that emphasize particular techniques and
aesthetic approaches. There are a number of wonderful programs, including a
symposium, planned around the exhibition. A complete schedule is available
on our Web site at http://AmericanArt.si.edu. Thanks again for writing.

> Dear Laura,
> Is there any truth to the rumor that the Clintons walked off with the
White House Crafts Collection, taking it to be installed in the Clinton
Presidential Library?
> Thought I would go 'to the source' as it were.
