designing a clay studio

updated fri 2 mar 01

Hello there,

I am posting this for a friend.

He is a senior at University of Maryland Eastern Shore in construction
management technologies and this is his senior research project required
for graduation. His client is a potter who is purchasing property and will
be building a home with a home-based pottery business.

He will be designing a home and studio with a seperate kiln room as well
as a kiln building for a gas kiln and a shed for a 17' anagama style wood
kiln.
He is gathering information about an ideal studio and work flow, as well as
equipment needs and footprints, etc. The studio will include and an area
for throwing and handbuilding, clay mixing, glazing and storage.

The home-based business regulations require 600 square feet only for the
business.

Any ideas for utilizing space efficiently and organizing the space to
facilitate
production, from those involved in producing pottery for a living be
much appreciated. Any unique ideas that could be incorporated to make the
space function well and be comfortable would be greatly appreciated.
Information is needed as soon as possible, as the project is due at the end
of
April.

If people would write to him and send him info, books, ideas to
make production easier, anything like that, it would be a great help.

His email address is "Frank J. Nice III"

Thanks,
Marlene

I don't think you could even get the Anagama into 600 square feet.
