Feri - I have the book "Athenian Vase Construction, A Potter's Analysis", by
Toby Schreiber, published by the J. Paul Getty Museum. The chapter on "Greek
Gloss and Firing" describes how the ancient greeks made a terra cotta terra
sig. which was burnished and then fired in a wood burning kiln. Reduction at
the end of the firing turned the terra sig. black. I would bet that this type
of pottery was always a little porous. You might want to look for this book
in Austrailia, just for inspiration if nothing else. The photography and
research are excellent.

Best of Luck,
