hello,

my name is ian von thaden. i am a ceramics student from th university of
north carolina now temporarily living and trying to work in tirana, albania.
i am interested in trying to build a small gas raku kiln for the tirana
academy of art. but, i am unsure as of where to look for financial help. if
there is anyone out there who can point me in the right direction of finding
a few hundred dollars to complete this project, i would be eternally
grateful.

if you are interested in recieving a full proposal and/or an explaniation of
why raku; or you would just like to know about life in tirana: e-mail me at:
vonthaden@mailcity.com or vonthaden@hotmail.com (the first is likely to get
you a quicker response)

thank you,
ian w. von thaden

Hi, Ian,
Sounds interesting. What are you doing in Albania? I built a small raku
kiln for the Art Institute of Tashkent in Uzbekistan when I had a
Fulbright there. The Fulbright office gave me money for books and
supplies. I brought them all to Uzbekistan through diplomatic pouch
(free shipping).
If you are in Albania on any particular type of official capacity like
International Institute of Education or Fulbright, then you could
contact those people and ask for help. You could also try to get the
U.S. emabbassy to help sponsor the project. Talk to the cultural attache
at the closest embassy. Promise some pots from the kiln. Promise
newspaper publicity. They love this stuff. and Raku lends itself to good
photos and dramamtic visuals for a newspaper.
Good luck,
Marcia in Montana
