Stephen, "best" schools for you may or may not be in Florida
or Georgia. In order to decide what's best for you, you'll
have to think about what KIND of ceramics you are interested
in, and seek schools that can help you in that area. There
are good schools in both Florida and Georgia. Investigate
them. Visit the facility. Talk with the faculty. Each
school, no matter where it may be, will have it's own rules
regarding what's expected of a ceramics major - and what level
of information they must enter with. Some schools will permit
you to make up "deficiencies" while you're enrolled as a
grad. Some won't.

Don't settle for a specific area just because it may be handy.
Think longer-term, and look for the place that will help you
most. You might do well to take a class or two while you're
deciding, or look for a place for a short-term apprenticeship
where you can get direct information and experience.

Mr. Stephen, I would be interested in your opinion of the University of
Florida, after your visit there. I have heard some good things both about the
faculty and facility.I also am interested in receiving my masters in ceramics
or possibly sculpture. thanks in advance and good luck. david hammel

Thanks for the quick reply Dannon!

And I agree with you about keeping my options open -
but I have to start looking somewhere! Thats why I'm
trying to develop a list of colleges to visit in those
areas. I've already decided to check out (in person)
a number of colleges, including (but not limited
to)the University of Florida, Savannah College of Art
and Design, Ontario college of Art and Design, and if
I can get there, the Nova Scotia College of Art and
Design. Are there other schools that you (or anybody
for that matter) can recommend I look into?
Apprenticeship appeals to me greatly also, but I don't
even have the first clue about finding out about that.
Thanks again for your speedy response.

Stephen

Regarding the ceramics MFA program at University of Florida, I do not know
how many U of FL campuses there are. But at the one where Linda Arbuckle
teaches, they also have Matt Long (potter) and Nan Smith (sculptor), and you
would be very hard pressed to find better than those three ANYWHERE. There
are certainly other good programs, but I think this one is among the best.
They also seem accepting of non-traditional students, and it seems that they
get some especially good students as a result.
Best wishes -

Stephen,

Another college in Canada is Sheridan, just west of Toronto, and very
respected for ceramics training. Web site:

Helen,
Irony of all Ironies is that I went to school at
Sheridan as part of my University of Toronto Art and
Art History degree! They do have a respected Ceramics
program don't they. How foolish do I feel for
overlooking it!
I'll definitely be looking into it now. Thanks for
the reminder Helen.
