good free commercial webspace?

updated tue 13 feb 01

I did have my commercial pottery webpage on Freemerchant, but they just
announced that if you actually want to SELL something on your site, now
you'll have to pay $25/month. That is about the equivalent of my
average web sales, so I've gone looking for other sites. In the new
"bottom line counts" web world, I doubt if any free services are here
forever, but after searching a bit I found Freeyellow.com (I am not
affiliated with them, except just now joining for the free page). It was
good in that you can FTP up your page, instead of being stuck in a
template. (you can see the difference by going to my old and new
websites listed at the bottom. The advantage of templates can include
shopping baskets...) Also FTPing makes page assembly quick--I built
the new one in an hour (but then I know what I'm doing)... I'd be
interested to hear what other free sites potters might recommend.
Also I'm considering Paypal as a cheaper alternative to getting a
commercial credit card account. Any experiences in that realm?

doesn't seem to work.)

I used Paypal as a customer on a used book site, and found it
cumbersome. I REALLY wanted the book, or I might have bailed out
of the red tape I was forced to participate in using Paypal.
When you use it as a customer, Paypal seems to assume you will
use it again, and wants quite a bit of bank account info,
etc....You can use it a number of times without sending this,
but I'd suggest trying it as a customer, so you know what your
customers will face....

I have used Angelfire which is free but has a pop up ad when you log on,
also Bizland isn't bad. I LOVE paypal and have used it as both a customer
and a seller.

I've used paypal as a customer numerous times, and after the initial info-entering
it's quite painless. Better for me than writing a check, getting an envelope, where
ARE those stamp? oh, I need a one-cent stamp now, well, you get the picture. I also
have some sense of faith that my information is being guarded. It seems no less
secure that doing banking on line, which I do frequently. I also use a firewall
(zone alarm, check out zonelabs.com). to insure nobody is peeking in my computer.
I'm very comfortable having this blind faith, and so far so good.

Hi All
I have a website through www.Bigstep.com. Hosting is FREE. Not just for 1
page but for your entire site. I know there's a max # meg space but I
haven't hit it yet. I have 27 precious with 2 pictures for each. If you
want credit card processing it is about $25/mo. You do have to use their
template approach to web construction. Having no website building
experience at all I found this helpful. Check out www.kaplandesigns.com to
get an idea of what your site could look like. I have no affiliation with
Bigstep. I just use them.
