kiln help for a newbie kiln owner

Hi all.

I'm a newbie who needs some advice about my kiln! I'm excited to be back
in contact with clay. I took a few years to develop my graphic/web
design career but my love for pottery has resurrected itself. I'm also
looking forward to reading all these discussions. Eventually I hope to
be where you all are in your ceramic careers.

Fortunately, on my tight budget I was able to find a used Paragon kiln
for $75. It is old but I beleive it will be a good starter kiln for me.
I did a lot of pottery through college and although I became pretty
proficient on the wheel I didn't pay enough attention to firing the work
(it was done for us). Therefore I'm a little intimidated.

This is the problem...I recently replaced all the elements because the
first and third elements were not working. Once put in though, the same
elements (first and third) are not heating up while the second and
fourth get red hot. I guess I probably didn't need to replace the
elements - although they were fairly brittle. I'm assuming that there is
a problem with some connections.

Could a gracious expert out there tell me what my next step should be? I
did check the archives but did not find the information I was seeking.
Maybe there is already a discussion archived that someone can point me
to.

Thanks so much!
I look forward to learning and adding to the discussions!
Angie
