Seems to me that we're being a tad harsh toward art historians. After
completing a few survey courses, one comes to expect that the instructor
basically will follow the curriculum which will likely be rather broad,
but will offer greater enrichment in his own areas of expertise.... it's
fortunate if that area happens to be one in which we have the most
intense interest ... but of course that can't be the case for each
student in the class... no one instructor can effectively meet all those
needs. So you sign up, take advantage of the opportunity to take
sidetrips on your journey, and move on. In clay I've spent more time on
sidetrips than on the straight&narrow one to my objective..... may it
ever be thus.
