and flat. They are factory coated with alumina and will fire to 2800 deg. He

Hello Clayart Readers!
I have been reading..lurking..for a couple months now,and love the
opinions,and facts I read here.
I am writing to offer good priced silicon carbide kiln shelves.
I have a friend who did a four month ceramics residency in China.
She met a woman, who helps the kiln shelf/furniture factory with their
sales,with english speaking customers.
My friend got an order of several hundred shelves, and I helped her
unpack them.
4 crates of gorgeous highly compressed shelves. They are the same
shelves used by the porcelain factories there.
They are regularly fired in the cone 13 range.
I am making cone 10 tile, and am filling my car kiln with these shelves.
As I have been getting ready to order these shelves, for myself,I have
met an importer/exporter who suggested I
fill a container. He said the shipping for a full 20 foot container
would be the same,or less as the shipping for my 3-4 crates.
I have offered this deal to friends, and we have almost a half container
sold.
I am able to turn crates around from Helena,Montana,so the prices
include everything to Helena.
I will be able to put crates on trucks out of here, but do not have the
ability to split crates.
So here is the deal...
I am ordering two sizes. 12"x24"x1/2",and 24"x24"x1/2"
The 12"x24"x1/2" come 150 to a crate.
The 24"x24"x1/2" come 100 to a crate.
The prices are...$35.00 per shelf for the 12"x24"x1/2"
$70.00 per shelf for the 24"x24"x1/2"
I can call for quotes for shipping out of Helena, and get back to
you, once a crate is sold, and then add that to to final price.
If you are seriously interested, please e-mail me off list.
Once the shelves are ordered,it will take about a
month to make, and another to get to Helena. I am hoping to order in a
month or less.
Just sharing a
good deal-Kim Loftus, living in Corbin Montana, where it was -25 last
week,with 2 feet of snow,and a high of +52 expected tomorrow! Love
those chinooks!

Hi Kim, I don't need any kiln shelves, but something in your e-mail
caught my attention:
Are you sure you want to order 1/2" thick kiln shelves? That is
awfully thin, especially for giant 24" X 24" shelves.
I have decades-old 12 X 24 silicon carbide shelves, and the 3/4"
thick ones have held up much better than the 5/8" thick ones. I
doubt that 1/2" thick ones would still be around after 20 years.
Not trying to interfere - just want you get shelves that will last.

hello,
yes these sort of are the poor potters advancers. they are highly
compressed, with compression splits towards the edges, for expansion.
the factories use these shelves, and they are fired over, and over...very
flat.
all the measurements i am getting are metric, and these shelves are 13mm.
the factory makes them thinner, but want to ship the 13mm,so they avoid
breakage.
they do make the one inch, and i could check prices if anyone wants a
crate of those.
thanks all-kim

My silicon carbide shelves are a centimeter thick, so not even a
half inch. They are 40cm by 35cm. Cost me 1200yen, (about $10.00
at the time) used. I think of them as "Poor Potters" Advancers

And aren't as fragile as far as ruff handling goes. Our brick man
gets them from factory potterys in Seto. They change their shelves
according to a schedual, whether they need to be or not.

My teacher has used the same kind of shelves for many years
in his smaller kiln. Euan bought his used, and put the 100th firing
on them in 2004. I don't know if you can get these in America, but
they sure save your back without busting the bank.

Hi all,
anyone have advice for me in where to go for silicon carbide shelves for =
=3D
a woodfiring kiln. I need a lot of them so am willing to buy used ones. =3D
If they need to be cleaned up but the price is right, that would be =3D
fine.
thanks,
Carolyn
