Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get good dark black in the crackle
of raku. In order for my pots to crack good I need to cool them about 3 min
till I hear them crackling. By then they are so cool that I only get a grey
on the unglaze part of the pot. Please help. vicki

Vicki.. you can go over the pots with India Ink.. Black..permanent.----.Brush
it on the pot.. let it dry and then wash/wipe off with a damp paper towel..
The glaze isnt permanent on glazed surfaces Jim in Denton.....

Vicki, You might want to try burping the reduction chamber after about 1
minute to allow the paper, sawdust,ect...to re flame, add a bit more
combustable material to the chamber to create more smoke. Then close the
lid. To get good dark crackles, you need lots of smoke when the pot is still
very hot. For sparce but dark crackles, burp once. For many small but dark
crackles, burp twice or three times. Also, I find that the glaze must be
fairly thick for good crackling.Happy Potting-Amy

TRY A QUICK WATER SPRITZ - THE BEST SPRAYERS ARE FROM
THE FEED STORE - HORSE SPRAY BOTTLES - THEY LAST
FOREVER AND DON'T CLOG. BE CAREFUL OF THE STEAM
COMING OFF THE POT. THAT GREY YOU DESCRIBE TELLS ME
YOU'RE LEAVING IT TO COOL FOR TOO LONG. ALSO, SEAL
YOUR CONTAINERS WITH WET TOWELS, THIS WILL
CONSISTANTLY GIVE YOU A DARKER REDUCTION.
