When I went to work in a bronze foundry, I was the first
woman to work in their metal shop. At 5'1" (in my steel-toed
workboots), some of the equipment was either awkward or
even unsafe for me. I kept a sturdy (and stable and wide)
step under the sandblaster, bench grinder, etc., and so never
had to snivel for help.

I drive a Japanese vehicle for similar reasons; I refuse to
strain to use something I paid good money for! (Hear that,
you six-foot-tall Detroit engineers?)

It's my world - I make it fit, or I make it suffer!

HI claybuds,

I'm sorry if I repeat someone, but haven't been back on list for very long.
The wedging table my husband and I made for our studio is of a height for him
(6') and we have a small bench made from two by six scraps that I can pull
out with my foot so I (5'2") can get some height and therefore weight behind
my wedging.

As an aside, when we built our present house over 25 years ago, I was baking
bread once a week for our family of six. So, in the kitchen, we installed one
set of cabinets which was actually meant for a bathroom. It's 31" in height
as opposed to the regular cabinets of 36". That way I could knead the bread
dough (enough for seven loaves) without having to stand on a small bench.
Much more pleasant and the kids could occasionally help.

Lynne
Glad to be back on list and back throwing after a couple of months off.
Missed you guys.

Hi Snail,
I am even shorter at 5 ft 1/2 in, and everything in the kitchen
cupboards is just out of reach without a stepstool! After 40 years of
marriage, my husband still manages to put some of the things I want out of
reach!
About wedging, I am in the process of setting up my first home
studio. I followed Elizabeth Priddy's wonderful advice about a wedging
bench. I found a lovely bench from South East Asia made of rubber wood at
Pier 1, and it is just great for wedging. No more stools to stand on to get
the height I need to wedge! Thank you, again, Elizabeth, and I just love
the bench. I wipe it down after every wedging session, and it is doing just
fine.
