fusion frit 71

updated fri 5 jan 01

Nils Lou on wed 3 jan 01

visiting my first teacher, jt abernathy, recently i found that he has been
largely working with raku for about 15 years. he asked me to see if anyone
had knowledge of f-71, a fusion frit. he was interested in knowing what
was in it as it performed well for him. he has gradually increased his
fluxes to 50% in his quest for longer lasting color, mostly copper blue,
reds and oranges (dash of iron).
other teachers i have had the honor of working with are claude horan who
taught me to throw (eventually) toshiko takaezu, herbert sanders and john
stephenson who had the wisdom to award me a "C" for a poorly wrought
semester. some students who have gone on to work in clay have been roxann
sorenson, fulltime potter in alexandria, mn, jay jensen, ohio state, who
later taught bill hunt, randy schmidt at arizona state, gene johnson, now
retired, and lately some unmentionables who are in various grad schools.
I don't know how it could be done, it seems daunting; but mel and i think
it would be interesting to see the thread that binds us all. no doubt some
visual graphic would be the easiest. perhaps at nceca in the clayart room
we could hang a large sheet of paper and draw the connections. just an
idea.
i hope all of you have had a fruitful holiday, now it's time to get back
to work. nils

Nils:
My datasheet from Fusion Ceramics gives this analysis for F-71:
K2O, 3.53; Na2O 20.46; CaO, 5.88; Al2O3, 5.85; B2O3, 5.94; SiO2, 58.29.
and this yields this Seger F
CaO 0.22 Al2O3 0.12 SiO2 2.06
K2O 0.08 B2O3 0.18
Na2O 0.70
If you need a high Na2O mix, this is it.
Best. Peace. Tom B.

Thanks, Tom. I'll pass this on to JT.
I think he found this worked well in his raku formula because of the high
silica as well as the high sodium.
be well, nils
