Ivor, others:
In the mid70s two cryogenic ships were built to transport
liquefied natural gas (LNG) from a mid-East port to a US eastcoast port.
The system worked well, but there was an accident and I suspect the US
authorities (eg, politicians) legislated the ships away from US ports so
the US owners probably switched to liquefied petroleum gases (LPG, mostly
propane and butanes) and move the LPG wherever the best price is.
The basic difference between LNG and LPG shipment is the temp and
pressure needed. LNG requires cryogenic cooling, via adibatic expansion
(10+%w of LNG goes to gas to fuel the ship), whereas propane and butanes
will stay liquid at modest pressures and temperatures.

Anybody out there know what happened to those LNG ships?

Tom,
I'll have to check my facts but I am pretty certain that the bulk gas ships
Ivor referred to are actually exporting LNG from Western Australia to Japan.
(At a bloody song of course.)

I remember when those ships were bringing LNG from Libyia To Boston harbor
and they off loaded it and trucked it up the North Shore right past the
place where I was working. I would look out my 3rd story office window and
see those huge sausage shaped trucks crusing by and cringe as I thought of
what would happen if it exploded at that moment. That was in the late 70's
or early 80's.
