I've been single firing porcelain for 15 years with few problems. Most
firings of my 24' updraft I have no losses from glazing or firing. I've
had more trouble with stoneware- about a 10% loss rate, usually while
glazing thinly thrown pots. I use a 'proto-porcelain', Dave's porcelain
from Laguna. Before that I used White Rose porcelain from Clay Art center
in Tacoma, Wa. I dip and/or pour all my work. I recently fired two slab
vases 34" tall x 8" diameter, my biggest so far. I poured the outsides and
sprayed the insides. Spraying is the safest method but pouring and dipping
the most economical in time and materials. The firing was successful and
the pots came out nice. Fear is the biggest obstacle.
