Hi:

I said I would post the other shinos that I've been working with but there
doesn't seem to be much interest. Probably because mel is getting all of
you worked up about blue glazes! :>)

I'll give you the flux ratios though in case anyone wants to try some of
these glazes. Once again, I used Ian Currie's grid method to blend in
alumina oxide and silica. I didn't use clay, which contributes both
alumina and silica to a glaze. I wanted to isolate the effects of alumina
and silica, which is of great importance with shinos. Well, to me anyway.

Shino Set #3 flux corner "C"

nepheline syenite 50.0
North Fork Stone 20.0
Fusion Frit 493 30.0

This ratio of fluxes will melt very well at cone 6. Maybe below that. I
fired the set to cone 10R. Instead of the North Fork Stone, you could add
another iron bearing slip clay or Redart. Then blend in Kaolin and or ball
clay, or alumina oxide. You can also add mixtures of alumina and silica
keeping the ratio at 4 silica to 1 alumina or slightly lower.

Fusion Frit 493 contains KNO, Li2O, and some B2O3 in terms of fluxes. We
really don't see boron in shino glazes but my findings are that it doesn't
change the character much if the boron isn't too high and it aids in
fusion. The seger equivalent of boron in this set is: 0.170.

That's it for me. I'm outta here, Craig Martell in Oregon
