The other day my daughter sort of threw me for a loop when she came out with
the following statement. " For years I just thought of you as someone who
made pots. It wasn't until I got to college, or graduated from college that
I realized that you really were an artist." That remark was made after she
went to the Phila. Crafts Show at the Civic Center, which I would died to go
to, but unfortunately I'm in TX. She had the opportunity to see some
beautiful work, ceramics, glass, wood, etc. I was thinking how proud I was
of her having taken the time to go, all by herself no less, thinking that
something must have got through. Well, if it took my daughter 23 years to
come to the conclusion that I "really was an artist", having been surrounded
with it most of her life, is it no wonder that the general publics concepts
of potters are just "these strange people who makes pots?" That last question
was not written to elicit any responses, we've been there and done that. So,
now I have at least one fan, who wants a set of canisters, a gravy boat, and
some dishes for Christmas! I hope all comes out well in the glaze firing
tomorrow.
And I also hope all you claybuds out there have a Merry Christmas and a
prosperous New Year.

It was nice to read Joyce's anecdote about her daughter and the
public's perception of potters.

The most widely exposed, positive image of a potter, in my opinion,
is the movie "Ghost."
