Bonnie,

I believe it is hydrofluoric acid.

It is used to etch glass and is very toxic.

The fumes themselves contain fluorine, which is what 'ate'
the oxygen atoms out of your silicate window glass.
Hydrofluoric Acid is just HF, chemically speaking.

Looks like the Clayart police are on their toes. Thank you for the
information. All I remember about the acid is that you don't get it on your
skin and that it was used to etch glass. I learned that in the dark ages of
high school about 65 years ago. So what etched the glass? There must have
been some transference of the fumes to an acidic action on the glass. Funny
there is hardly any mention of sulphur in my ceramics library. At any rate,
it is not good for you.

hydrofluoric acid is used to etch the glass. But it's a very dangerous
matter.
