pierre bayle's work

I recently saw the work of Pierre Bayle and am hoping somebody might be able
to give me some imformation about the clay he uses, which has been described
as a white "faience". I've read that that is a French description for a
"fine-bodied English earthenware". What does all this mean in terms of clay
composition? Also, although I understand that the terra sigillata he uses
is defloccutlated with soda ash, I don't understand how that affects the
crazing of the terra sig or the high sheen. Help, anybody?

Ahh, another admirer!

Elke Blodgett, on the list, probably knows the most about him and his work.
She wrote an article about him and knows him

The white clay is supposed to be a local clay from the area where he lives.
How he gets the crackling in his terra sig is a mystery that was discussed
on Clayart a couple years ago. Supposedly, even he doesn't understand how it
comes. I know that he has a very high rate of discards. I suppose due to
high standards and maybe lack of that crackle(?)

The only other person I saw how managed to achieve the same effect (on a
very irregular basis) was the late and much missed Peggy Heer of Alberta.

Good luck, Pierre's work inspired me to try terra sig but launched me down a
whole 'nother avenue with it.
