split fingers and cracked skin

Karen, I have had some splits at the fingernails and between the fingers
and at the knuckles. I have gradually come to a several step plan to reduce
or prevent the occurrence. The first thing I did was to always wash my
hands thoroughly after a clay session WITH SOAP to really remove the clay
residue. That seemed to help quite a bit. There were still problems, so I
concentrated on working so that I didn't let clay dry on my skin. I
reasoned that the invisible residue that I had previously tried to just
rinse off was killing my skin by drying and sucking out what little oil was
there, so having great gobs of it dry on my skin while I was working was
bad, too. I achieved some success in this effort by keeping a bucket of
water by the wheel and washing down at breaks, washing between various
activities. That still left some times where the dreaded drying could
occur. Wedging was one. In the effort to keep clay from drying on the
skin, I finally turned to technology! Diaper Rash Crème! I now rub the
backs of my hands and fingernails and knuckles with a zinc oxide barrier
crème. I don't worry about the palms too much because they are the active
surface and the drying doesn't happen much there. This step has really
reduced my skin cracks to nearly nothing. This crème works great, get some
in the baby section, and then go the automotive section and get some grease
removing hand cleaner. Put the grease (oops, crème) on, clay play, and then
remove with lots of auto soap. you can finish with regular soap and hand
lotion if you like. This regimen has cut down my nail splits a lot. Also,
babies and auto mechanics seem to have more of an affinity for me than
before. Humm.

Did no one convert to raw carrots last winter?
External (not internal) application.
Shame on you all!!

Come on now! Sing with feeling: "CARROTS WORK
WONDERS, work wonders, work wonders. Carrots
work wonders, SO GET SOME TODAY!"

A whole lot less fuss and far cheaper than all
these gimmicky; REGIONAL remedies!

And they beat urine any day... You may all be
too old (or not old enough) to remember, but I
can distinctly recall how nice, warm wet turned
horribly cold in the shortest time...

Cindy S. cites water. I swear by carrots...
Either way, it beats all the fuss and palaver!
Like Mel's white, waggy baggies... Cotton gloves
are a turn-off!! Surgical gloves... Yes, well...
You could also try tying individual condoms tied
onto the split and cracked parts. Better not go
into that... The Mayor might blush, especially
if he is out hunting this week...

NOw this is a salaciously wicked post. Full of innuendo and suggest
stuff, right in there with Mel's underwear from times past. Carrots indeed!

Seriously, "wet knickers-R-Us", in the United States they have a product
called "Depends". Perhaps you could look into getting some.

:)
