black clay concerns

I do not usually respond to this list unless it directly involves Kickwheel=20
Pottery Supply. I am usually quite content to let you all have at it. I, nor=
=20
any one that works here, have ever said that our KPS 333 Black Raven=20
stoneware clay contains a Drakenfeld stain. It has always been stated that=20
this clay is colored with several iron oxides and also contains less than 1%=
=20
manganese dioxide which is used to cool the color from the iron. Several=20
other commercial black clays contain far greater manganese contents in their=
=20
composition. Our printed literature and our extensive web page at=20
www.kickwheel.com all inform the user of its inclusion in the clay.
We believe that potters should actively seek to acquire and use all=20
available information concerning the various elements in their studios. This=
=20
information is necessary to protect your health and should be easily obtaine=
d=20
from your chosen supplier. There is also a need to balance that information=20
with actually having to use clay and glaze materials to produce various=20
pottery items in a safe and sane manner. The days of potters mixing glaze by=
=20
sticking their arms into the glaze bucket to stir it up should be over. But=20
should we pot covered from head to toe, wearing plastic gloves, living in=20
fear of the next unknown hazard involved in working with clay? Common good=20
housekeeping, ventilation and reliable information goes a very long way when=
=20
it comes to a potter=E2=80=99s health.
