stilts and warping

Marianne. The answer to your question is "That depends". I've used stil=
ts
(the kind that are a triangular pice of clay with 3 wires sticking up) wh=
en
firing to Cone 6 and had no problems. If you're firing to cone 10 your
pieces will probably not only warp but the stilts will sink into the glaz=
e
and get glazed on to the piece. =

I have made my own 'stilts' by making a round disc of clay slightly small=
er
than the diameter of the bottom of my thrown piece. This disc is bisqued=

along with the piece and used as a stilt in the glaze firing. This
enables you to glaze right down to the bottom of the piece,(with a glaze
that doesn't run, of course) and the disc keeps it off the shelf so it
doesn't stick.
Here again, it works in cone 6 but not so well in cone 10. Even though =
it
supports the whole bottom of the piece, I've had stuff warp in Cone 10. =
