Why don't you call PG&E and get on the list for a time of use meter? It took me
about 6 months to get one, but my electricity is very expensive from 12noon-6pm
(especially in summer) but very inexpensive from 6pm-12noon and on weekends. Then
you can fire all you want on off hours.

The cost of firing a load of pots is increasing every day. Electric and
natural gas rates in Northern California have already risen significantly
from last year. A recent court decision allow the electric utility
(Pacific Gas & Electric) to pass on to their customers more than $1
Billion of increased costs to purchase peak demand power. I am firing
every other day to get as much done as I can before the new rates take
effect.

I have always want to have a wood fired kiln. I was considering the
implications of this whole new way of working when I read the following
article in a local paper:

If you do not want to look it up, the article states that one jurisdiction
is banning the use of wood burning stoves and restricting fireplaces in new
construction. So, I appears that I would have to move to be able to have a
real wood-fired kama. Maybe I will just pay the electric bill and shut up.

No duties. I don't have to be profound.
I don't have to be artistically perfect.
Or sublime. Or edifying.
I just wander. I say: "You were running,
That's fine. It was the thing to do." - Czeslaw Milosz

How much does it cost to fire a load where you live?

Cindi, Congratulations on getting a Time of Use meter. I have contacted
PG&E on this several times. Each time they said that they would turn on
Time of Use metering if the appropriate meter were already installed, but
that they would NOT install a new meter to do so. I have not read
California Public Utility Commission regulatiosn to find out whether they
can be forced to provide this service.
