computer buying (advice)

one size fits all is the dumbest concept in the world.
it means it fits no one at all perfectly. just like a kiln...match
it to your work load. make it yours.

computers are very personal, they fit people in different
ways.

if you are going to do tons of graphics, photoshop, illustrator and
the other great programs...mac is the answer, and a big mac
at that. no one in graphics can afford the luxury of simple machines.
it is life blood.

i have come a long way in the last 5 years. i no longer think
that name brand machines mean that much. they are difficult to
predict.

the last computer that i have purchased was built for me, to my
specs. it is for clayart and the kinds of things that i do. (had a
young man build it for me, i can now do that myself.)

what is under that cover is what counts. simple, fast, and trouble
free is my motto.

my specs:

intel mother board
intel III processor to match
sound blaster sound card
u.s. robotics biggest modem
ibm 10 gig hard drive (same as the server uses)
windows 98 second edition
sony trinatron 18 inch screen
roller ball mouse
ibm key board
all adobe matching software photoshop le, (have full edition but
it is too complex, le is better for everyday use.) pagemill web
builder, all eudora pro 4.3. hp printer, and an hp cd drive burner.
a simple scanner. (i have an imation super disc external storage
that goes from machine to machine....it fits the laptop and the farm
machine...nice to load stuff from machine to machine. parll/port design)
this system is perfect for me. it fits as a tailored suit.

i have all the software close at hand. never use anyone else's
stuff. buy it and keep it. if you have to re'install, it takes
three minutes.

this package was about 900 dollars. it is a kick ass machine.
almost trouble free. it has seated itself well, and should last
me a long time. i will add a second 10 gig hard drive next year.

i have an ibm aptiva at the farm, it is a pain. works, but you
have to mess with it all the time...(like owning a british mg..
cute, but constant repairs.)
have finally gone back to windows 95, stripped out all the software,
re/formatted, and moved the operating system to a new hard drive D. it is
better now. just use the c drive for storage.
works, but i do not love it.

so, my advice to anyone, look at your needs, measure them, ask
some experts, but do not be afraid to have one built for you.
that is what i like about dell, they custom most of the machines
to the business needs of the client. we just bought 15 complete
dells for the art center and they are swift.

the only two computers that i would buy over the counter at
comp usa is a mac or a hp.
