Kelly - I know that there is a potter in Wales, an older man of , I =
believe, Polish origen, that had a stroke several years back. He throws =
with his one good hand. Sorry I can't recall his name....I met him at =
the Potters' Festival in Aberystwyth in '97...perhaps Janet or one of =
the others over there know more about him and his ability to throw with =
just one hand and could give you some ideas. Carly

He still lives and works about 10 miles/15 km up
the road from us in a village called Sarn. He is
Czech (not Polish) and has managed to regain
some use of the paralysed side (leg and arm)
through sheer hard work, cussedness and faith in
God.

Sorry to say, I have not seen him throw since
his stroke some years ago, although I watched
him work as a student in the 70s... "Sarn
Pottery" was one of the many workshops in North
Wales at that time.

I am not sure that his example would help with
the case in point, because he does have two
hands, even if the one is only very weak.
However, I did know another potter some years
ago, whose arm ended just below the elbow. She
had a solid plastic hand which fit onto the arm.
She did not wear it all the time because it was
designed as a cosmetic addition rather than for
practical use and hurt when she wore it a lot.
But she used it most effectively to throw with.
I used to think it would be the same as throwing
with one hand in the usual way and having a
fixed implement in the other. I never saw her
throwing without, so imagine she found it was a
necessary tool at the wheel.
