tile source - desperate

Bonnie, the best source of bisque tiles that I have found is to make them myself.
I know what my clay and glazes do together and have only been disappointed with
manufactured bisque tiles. Roll and cut your tiles, score the backs lightly, and
dry slowly between 2' X 2' sheets of wallboard (plaster board) It depends whether
your weather is dry or damp that they will dry on time. I can get by with 10 days
between boards and another day air-drying or loose plastic drying before a slow
bisque (candle well).

My thicker-than-the-average-commercial-6x6-tiles warped at
cone 10 in the tile setters. Don't know, if commercial ones
will or not ( it will depend on the claybody I expect)

Hi Bonnie!
I wheel throw tile. Just figure the diameter you need to reach corner to
corner on your finished tile including shrinkage, mark that size with a
magic marker on your bat, weigh out the clay balls so the tile finish the
same size when thrown to the mark and throw them to the mark. Then they are
always the same thickness. I wire them loose and cut them to size with a
square metal template I made. They are as uniform as you could ever want and
really fast to make.

I fire tile on Thorley 5/8" standard shelves to ^ 10 with no warpage. Just
cut some IFB straights into 1.25" X 2.5" X 9" saggars and ring the tile
shelves with them to even out the firing. It really works well for large
flat pieces like platters since they then heat from above and below rather
than from the edge. Just be sure you alternate layers eith regular stacks so
that the heat has a way in from both above and below.

Dear Clayarters.

Sure hope someone has the answer to this question as I have to create 58
finished tiles in two weeks. I am looking for 6" commercial bisque tiles
which I can fire to ^9 Ox. Does anyone have a source? Would love to be
able to use my tile setter to fire them if they won't warp. TIA

Hi, Bonnie.
The only bisqued tiles I've ever seen that will go to cone 9 are made by
Toucan Tile in Seattle, and sold by Clay Art Center in Tacoma, WA. Go
to www.clayartcenter.com or call 800-939-8783. They are a bit thick,
about 1/2", and do not fire white (slightly yellow in oxidation, grey in
reduction) and I have no idea whether they would sag in a tile rack or
not.
Good luck,
Paul Lewing, Seattle

I have never met a tile that won't warp in a tile setter at stoneware
temperatures. The only reliable answer is to fire them flat on small
shelves. The only things that won't warp in that situation at those
temperatures are kiln shelves and they are made out of highly compressed
Mullite (like 200 tonnes per square inch).

You might want to give Otto Heino a call in Ojai, California. When Vivika was
alive she ordered cone 10 porcelain tiles somewhere in New York I think. I
don't know if they're still available, but Otto can give you the name of the
company.

June

John Glick extrudes a special shape for firing his cone 10 tiles. It looks
something like this:

The tile sits on edge and leans against the slanted back piece.
