Hi,
I'm just starting the fascinating journey of glazes and glaze chemistry.
I'm in love with
Laura Andreson's glazes. Is there anyone out there who knows how to get
information on her glazes and firing techniques? So far I've found the
Potter's Studio article from years back on the Copper Reds. But I'd like
to know more about the matt as well as other glazes I see in her Mingei
Museum catalogue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rita,
Laura Andreson taught at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her
glaze firings were for cone 9 to 10. She specialized in crystalline matt
glazes. I have two of her small porcelain bottles. One is gold colored and
the other is a medium blue. Here is one of her recipies from John
W.Conrad's book Contemporary Ceramic Formulas.

Laura Andreson's crystal base, cone 9, oxidation

Kingman felspar(old Kingman) 52.7 Matt,opaque,soft white,
colemanite 12.5 subtle broken pattern
Barium carb 11.4
Whiting 7.8
Titanium oxide 7.0
Zinc oxide 5.3
Kentucky old Mine #4 3.3

add Copper carb 1.0 soft grey green, light

grey crystals

Kingman felspar that was mined before l976 had less than 1 % iron oxide in
the mineral. The Kingman mined today has 6% iron. This difference will
greatly affect crystal and many other glazes, clay bodies engobes ,etc, but
not dark colored glazes. Kingman is not available at present.

Hope this helps. Mia in ABQ
