funky iron oxide

I had an experience today with red iron oxide that stumped me, and maybe
someone can explain it to me. I was making a batch of Ohata Khaki glaze
(^10), which called for over 500 g of RIO. I noticed that the iron was not
it's usual red orange color, but had become a little dark and slightly
bluish. When I started to mix the glaze, the RIO would NOT go into
solution, but stayed dry and separate on top of the glaze. Screening didn't
help, and the stuff stayed on top no matter how I treated it. Anyone know
the story here? I mixed a new batch w/ a different package of iron, but I'd
really like to know what was going on here. Thanks in advance - Dennis in
Wyo.

We've had the same problem in the past with copper carbonate. It appears
that during the manufacturing process some form of grease got into the
mix. The cure was a small amount of washing up liquid in the glaze.

Thanks! Yep, I get to wear that "stoopid" sign this week! - Dennis in Wyo.

Kinda sounds like you grabbed red copper oxide instead of the red iron
oxide. Might ought to check the bag again...

Dennis

It sounds like you are using red copper oxide instead of RIO. When I first
started making glazes the only copper I had was the red and it acted that
way until I started mixing a tad of dish washing soap into the glaze mix.
