I have received a few answers about building a flat-top kiln. The
overwhelming opinion was the flat-top structure was sound and works well.
There is a problem if you don't check the rods for tightness after each
firing for the first few firings. Nils suggested at least the first firings
and then once a month after that. He suggested 40 ft.lbs of pressure on the
rods. We have decided to proceed with the flat-top.

To see the progress of our 118 cu.ft. propane fired kiln as it is built, go
to this website. Bookmark the page, because we will be adding more pictures
to it as we build. We are finished with the car and the walls of the kiln
and the structure of the kiln shed. We are starting the shed roof, burners
and the flat-top this week. We are using IFBs and building burners
according to specs and parts from Ward Burners.

I wanted to tell those who are interested in publishing photos of their
pots that digital cameras do an excellent job of capturing the 3D look of
glazed ware. I have found flash photography of pottery to be extremely
difficult. The flash washes out and covers over the pot. Spot lighting
gives even professional photographers fits with glazed ware. The
reflections are hard to deal with.

With my digital camera (a high end model) I do not use flash and the
pictures turn out great. I publish web pages and do some print work also,
the digital camera for print media must have very high resolution and is
very expensive. The web's demands are more modest and a camera that takes
good shots for the web can be had under $500.00 easily. (In my own
experience, for a mid-range camera, I am partial to Olympus 460 or 450 due
to their light-gathering ability. Flash is not needed with them under
adequate lighting and they adjust the white point for different light
sources automatically quite well. There are other cameras that will do this
also.)

If you want to do your own shots, check into digital. I love the 3D effects
and the quick turn-around from shot to publishing.
