single glaze firing?

Luis,

You don't need a bisque firing, but treat your one-time firing as a bisque
firing with regards to speed. Bisque firings must be slow and gentle, at
least until the pots have released all free and chemically bound water. I've
heard many different versions of the temperature at which it's safe to speed
the kiln up. I hold mine at below boiling for 1-6 hours, depending on what
I'm firing, then go slowly (150F/hr) to 500F, and then crank it up. It works
for me. Just don't blow up all those nice bonsai pots by starting them out
too fast.

Hello all,

I've been busy making bonsai pots since the arrival of my electric wheel.

Is it necessary to bisque fire before glaze firing if no glaze is to be used?
I know that the pieces must be very dry, but I wish to skip this step for
unglazed bonsai pots.

Thank you in advance!

If your not going to glaze your pots you can fire them without a bisque
fireing. Just start them out like a bisque only fire to what ever cone
you're going up to. When I do this I start out on low with lid part way
open for one hour, then close the lid for one hour on low, trun up to med.
for two hours and then on high. I've never had any problems doing it this
way. Josie Venice, Florida

Louis,

I've been firing work that is to be left unglazed or glazed at a much lower
temp to its maturity. Haven't had a problem yet.
