Sometime ago, whil running my search engine program, looking for everything
I could about Silicon Carbide, I arrived to this site, called Clay
The site is:
http://www.wmin.ac.uk/media/designmedia/ceramics/research/Default.html

The artist name is Pat Lester (Pat's pots)
I sent him letters twice and they came back. Pat
fires his Pots to ^10, WITH SiC and gets beautifull craters.
I fire to ^6ox and still want beautifull craters.
I was told to use a matte glaze that will capture the carbons bubbles. Any
better help? I have 600 200 and 100 mesh Silicon Carbide.

Ababi Sharon was asking about cone 6 crater glazes...

Hello Sharon (or is the first name Ababi?),

The latest Ceramics Monthly had a bunch of cone 6 glazes in an article by
Rick Malmgren. I tried the one below and was quite delighted with the
result. The final glaze stays put and bubbles with two poured coats, but
runs with three coats. The color of the final coat is white -- it works well
on top of a glossy brown glaze, because the bottoms of the craters are brown
while the ring is white. I fire to cone 6 in reduction, but don't see
anything in the recipe that would care if you fire in oxidation.

Many thanks to Rick Malmgren for publishing this. His article articulates a
belief in the possibilities at cone 6 which will encourage you when you see
the pictures of his results.

Best,
Jeff
