Majolica/maiolica,
I have been watching this discussion with interest and fascination at
how long a discussion based on a seemingly innocent question can last! I
was taught simply that there are many words and pronunciations for
basically the same thing and everyone reaches his/her own version
usually based on where she/he is from and with whom she/he studied.
I just returned from the outstanding Utilitarian Clay III at Arrowmont
where (among many wonderful presenters) Walter Ostrom gave two excellent
talks on decorated ware and majolica/maiolica. He addressed the
controversy briefly and pleaded for the case that we all start using the
phrase "tin-glazed ware" since it was all encompassing and less
confusing. (This doesn't, of course, take into the fold the great
English stuff Vince was talking about which uses a version of the name
without being tin-glazed). I like the idea - any chance it will catch
on?
