designing for mass market

Is there anyone out there who has designed and /or produced originals
destined for mass production? Or anyone who has been involved with
larger scale design, manufacturing or marketing?
A manufacturer saw a few pieces of mine and has asked if I would be
interested in designing and producing originals for large(r) scale
production.
I'm talking about large fountains, reproduced in , yes, a
resin/concrete type material.
This level of business is new territory for me . I would very much like
to hear from those of you who have 'been' there. I am being offered a
percentage of gross sales , much like a musician's royalty, but also
have been offered no up front money.

I need to find out what the norm is for such arrangements/ contracts,
and also any anecdotes about the good, bad and the ugly of it.
Honestly a large incentive for me is financial. I have Noooo problem
with the concept of a royalty check.
Such a proposal raises a number of questions. On one hand , is
apprehension about possibly seeing one's design , cheaply done, at every
Home Depot across the land. On the other hand ,is a challenge to step
in and design something better than the existing stuff. (not hard to
do).

There are a thousand other pros and cons, too numerous to mention. This
one fell into my lap though ,so here I am, sizing it up and needing to
scout out the territory. A blessing , or the devil at my doorstep with a
nice bouquet of flowers? hmmmmm!

Spare the preaching, but words of wisdom from those well traveled much
appreciated.
