Hank replies;
the Currie grid method simply places fluxes in a field related to
kaolin(and/or alumina) and silica to reveal a 'family' of glazes at
different temperatures and atmospheres.

The 'old' Foote spodumene had some iron in it; but no phosphorus, while the
Tanco low melt spodumene has some phosphorus because of the amblygonite
content of their ore. Since phosphorus is my friend, I usually go with the
Tanco version. But hey! go with what you can get, and order the Tanco. i
get it from Georgies in Portland, OR.

Meanwhile, check out Ian Currie's websites for info on the assessment tiles
and the grid method.

Ian's grid method is covered in his new book "Revealing Glazes -
Using the
Grid Method." It's available from the authors website, among other
places.
