glazes for dark clays

Chris Campbell writes of frustration over finding good glazes for a fine
dark Highwater clay. This summer, we were in Vancouver, BC and I got some
terrific Plainsman clay, 440, if I remember correctly. Fell in love with the
stuff. Bought some more and brought it home to Arizona. It is, like Chris's,
a nice dark brown. What kind of ^ 10 Red. glazes do well on a claybody like
that?

Dear Roger:

I use celadons on that clay and also on the H443 which is also to die for.
I prefer blue-green glossy celadons but try other transparents as well.
Also just with soda Ash wash and slips is great.

Roger, Chuns look great on darker bodies. I would guess that Temmokus and
Iron reds would do well as would red shinos.
Glazes that don't benefit from the iron in the body which will greatly affect
color on transparent glazes, would need good opacification, i.e. 15 -20%
Zircopax or 4+% of tin oxide.

I recently used some Laguna Dark Brown /\ 10 red. fired gas kiln and I use
OHATA RED..I got the Rx from Viveka Heino, . She was fond of it.The conrast
between the dark brown matt clay surface and the glossy iron red was great.
I left a lot of the exterior of the bowl unglazed .

OHATA RED

G200 FELDSPAR 48.6
WHITING 7.2
EPK 6.3
TALC 6.3
BONE ASH 10.0
SILICA 21.6

RIO 10-11%
BENTONITE 1%

Apply and fire as if it were a Tenmoku-thicker, rather than thinner

I have a mid-range clay from Armadillo called Cinco Rojo. A glaze
that looks really smashing over it is a satin finish blue that breaks
nicely over the very dark clay. I won't give the recipe since you
are at ^10, but it's a color to consider, unless one is of the
anti-blue persuasion.

Wichita Falls, TX. It is blessedly cool here today but still no
rain. We had thousands of monarch butterflies hanging from the trees
for a couple of days. Wonderful!
