Greg,
When I fired to cone 9 and 10 I used a porcelain and a stoneware clay
for cone l0 without problems. When I started firing at the cone 5 to 6
range I began using a stoneware clay from Laguna that was described as
firing from cone 5 to 10, and which would vitrify at cone 6.
I began experiencing problems with a reliable glaze, namely hairline
cracks in some pieces which made those particular pots unsellable. Even
adding additional flint to the glaze did not help.
Since then I discussed this problem with two potters who also happen to
be in the ceramic supply business. Their assessment was that a clay with a
supposedly wide ranging firing capacity was not desirable and that I could
expect glazes to craze and have other faults.
Therefore I am now using two claybodys specified for cone 4 to 6.Mia in
ABQ where Fall has finally decided to cool things off.
