Hello All;

I am a studio potter with an opportunity to stay in Hawaii, on the Big
Island, for a few month, and will be seeking out artists in clay.
I would appreciate any advice on studios, and would love to hear from any
Big Island ClayArters.

Thanks Very Much.

Sherri,
Looks like we don't have any clayarters on the big island. (Dean's
on Kauai). We have a condo in Kona and I've wandered around quite a
bit. Found a potter in Hilo who does some lovely crystal glazes,
while his wife does wall tiles. And there's a potter in Holualoa who
does absolutely incredible, enormous raku. (Holualoa is only one
block, with 2 galleries, so you can't miss it). And a lady in Kailua
who churns out a lot of hibiscus, etc, on plates--she also offers a
place to work+ wheel+ kiln, last I heard. One of the best ways to
find them is to attend the various farmer's market/craft fair combos
and just introduce yourself. I found the one in Hilo by looking at
the bottom of a jug I really liked and asking the shop owner where it
originated. I called and they gave me directions. If you've got
more than 2 weeks you'll find them. (They run but they cannot hide.)
Check out the gallery in Kawaihae. Stuff to die for. Next life I
hope to be a woodcarver. Will probably be a cockroach...

Does anyone here know of any potters in the Puna District/Hilo area of Hawaii? I will be visiting there and am trying to find out about obtaining clay supplies and also just interested in connecting with fellow potters.

Thanks in advance.
