A cousin of mine recently married, and I just found out that her new
husband's late uncle was a lifelong potter in England. His name was David
Stamford Ballantyne, and he was at some point the Head of Ceramics at the
Lansdowne School of Art in Bournemouth in the UK. I am curious if any of
our UK members ever heard of him or if anyone knew him or his work. I
wasn't able to find anything about that school on the web.

Dear Holly,

I once met David Ballantyne at an exhibition opening in Ringwood, Hampshire.
A nice man.he even bought one of my pots which made him a very nice man! His
brother is, or was, Rollo Ballantyne a well known collector of pots. His
collection, or at least part of it, was given to Derby University in his
name. I happen to have a Bernard Leach jug which had belonged to Rollo
Ballantyne. I bought it at auction when he and his wife decided to thin out
their collection a little. I believe David Ballantyne was co inventor of a
particular kind of throwing wheel later called 'The Saviac' along with
another potter, Peter Stoodley who is still going strong.

Hope all that is of interest,

Phil.

Guess that's one for me, then - i live in Bournemouth.

I'll do some research, but some more detail would help - such as dates. The
Art College now has splendid new buildings (I'll dig out their web site
later), but even the only building that might have been the Lansdowne School
of Art has been the main public lending library for some time - i thought
from before the last war. I have lived around here for only the last 15
years or so, so don't have personal memories [and no memories that far
back!]. Bournemouth is funny like that - it seems very hard to find
natives - there is a transient population, many new comers all the time.

The College will be gearing up for it's new entrants any time now, so i
might wait until the furore has died away.

Any other details would help - email me off list if you prefer.

Dear Holly

David Ballantyne was a highly respected Potter and Educator who ran one
of the best Pottery training courses in the UK. There was I believe an
excellent article published about him shortly after his death, I think
in Ceramic Review, the magazine produced by the Craftsmen Potters
Association. They are contactable by email, though at this moment
(sadly) I can't remember the address.
