Hi,
If it is signed with Vivika's name then it is worth some money since she
has passed away, I don't know the exact date. He signs his work Otto
now. And they are worth big bucks! Mike

Hi All,

Nice to be back after a long absense!

I am wondering what anyone can tell me about the general value of a
Vivika and Otto Heino bowl that the school I work for owns. We are
interested in knowing whether it should be insured and about approximate
value or valuing systems. It is a nice rich iron clay body fired in
reduction and glazed with a greenish background with stamped decorations
all around and iron highlights on the lip, base, around the stamps, and
a blue band (possibly slip under the glaze, or a cobalt wash over the
glaze) circling the middle horizontally. Anyone who might be able to
help, email me directly and I will send a pic. I have tried a few
galleries local and NY to find some help, and for some reason they are
not willing. We would of course insure it depending on its value.

Thanks for your help!

In the June/July/August issue of CM there is an article about Otto's
production and its price. The vessels are in the neighborhod of $10-20
thousand. You might call the Garth Clark Gallery in NYC, and see what he
says.

Hi there I Have know Vivika & Otto for some time about 25 years or so. To
give you a price on this bowl I would nee to see it. You can e mail me at
cantello@2xtreme.net The thing I would to say about this big money thing
that Otto's seems to be have is its all true but most of it is the doing of
one Japanese collector and its great but nothing makes Otto laugh more then
some one paying to much for a peace of pottery. He has always been one to
brag about how he can get so much for one pot but he really dose think its
nuts. And yes he will take the money why not so would I. If you were to ask
me if I think he deserves it I would say why not He's pushing 84 and still
loves to get up and throw every day. It's all the man ever seem to do. The
funny thing if he only got ten bucks for a pot his life and work would not
change. He just loves clay.

As to the signature on work by either Otto or Vivika, I'm not quite sure when
they started doing so, but as long as I knew them as a couple they signed all
work by either of them "Vivika & Otto". Otto continued that practice for about
a year after her passing, then switched to signing just his own name.

I'd suggest getting in touch with Otto directly for help in the valuation of
your school's piece. He might be a big help. You can reach him via e-mail if
you send your remarks, attached photos, etc. to potshop@ottospottery.com . I
don't think he's checking his e-mail himself, so you might want to allow for
some delay in his getting your message. If you visit his web site at
http://www.ottospottery.com you'll see his phone at his home gallery "The
Pottery". You might try reaching him that way as well.
