l & l vent

Just because you smell something doesn't mean you have
"fumes".
"Fumes" in this context meaning bad, poisonous, harmful air.
Electric kilns cab and will smell "hot", if the venting
system is working correctly you probably don't need to
worry about it.

I have a 2 year old L&L JD230 kiln.
One month ago I installed the L&L
vent. The vent is pulling air but
I am still getting fumes in the room.
The first firing (bisque)
I left the top peephole open as
the Dawson kiln sitter info says
to do so.
I called and spoke to their
support person. He said close the
top peep hole and if not enough air
is being drawn drill another hole.
I did that and the next firing
still had fumes.
HELP....
Does anyone have an L&L kiln with
a Vent-toor vent who can walk me
through this???
You can contact me off list so as
not to bore people.
Thanks,

Possible reasons for fumes in the room:

1. Leaks in the dryer duct

2. An obstruction at the vent where the fumes exit the building

3. Inadequate air flow through the kiln

Hi Gayle,

It could be that your expectations for totally odor-free firing are too
high. I have had 3 of these kiln vents (3 different brands including L&L
on my present kiln) over the years and have never achieved totally
odor-free firing. They are a big help, but odor-free they are not. It
could be that anyone who says they have an odor-free system simply has a
less sensitive sense of smell than you do--people's ability to smell
things does vary quite a bit.

That said, there are at least 3 other things you should check. The L&L
vent is intended to be mounted on an exterior wall. The connections from
the blower through the wall must be air tight. Check them carefully. (on
the Scutt and Orton products the duct leading from the blower to the wall
must also be airtight--a more demanding challenge).

Secondly, where does your vent exit? If it goes into your garage or is
close to a door or window, the fumes might be vented and then work their
way back into your studio. It doesn't take more than a few molecules of
some of these combustion products for you to smell them. This can happen
even if the door or window is closed. If that is the case you may want
to better seal the nearby door/window or keep your garage open during
firing.

Thirdly, you may have a defective blower system that, for some reason, is
not functioning properly. Close your kiln and turn on the vent blower.
Hold a lighted match near an open peep hole or near the hole you drilled.
You should be able to see the flame bend noticeably toward the hole. If
it does not you need to figure out why you are not getting adequate air
pulled through the blower. It could be anything from a big leak in the
duct leading to the blower to a fan blade that is slipping on the shaft
to a plugged blower outlet.

I hope this helps, John
