lost of owls/fire in sierras

Joyce,

One more thought on the owls: I find I tend to get cracks along long,
unbroken, incised lines (only on flat surfaces). Solution: incorporate
breaks in your lines here and there. In some Native American designs, there
is a taboo against long unbroken lines. You have to incorporate breaks to
allow spirits to escape or they'll break the object trying to get out. I
wonder if that custom started because of experiences with pottery?

Thank you for all the great advice about preventing my owls plaques from
cracking when fired ....... ideas such as using groggier clay (will
do!), firing on sand (have done; will do again), not firing so high
(fully intend to take these no higher than ^9 or ^10), applying support
bands of clay as decoration in spots most likely to crack (good idea),
not making them so large for now (agree) etc. I think you now have me
thinking on the right track.....

As to the fires .... thanks for all the good thoughts ... and yes, it
is the fire that's on the news as being in or near the Sequoia National
Forest or Bureau of Land Management Land. Burned 5,000 acres first day;
up to 12,000 the next; increased to 25,000 day before yesterday; and
yesterday we were up to lost acreage of 50,000 plus. I couldn't get the
flame-rimmed mountain shots ... too obscured by smoke. Every evening
winds come from the southwest and clear the smoke somewhat which allows
us to see the tops of the flames, but not yesterday. They're burning
backfires today just 17 miles from us in an area where #1 Support Person
used to motorcycle and over which he flew his ultralight ..... gets some
pretty heavy winds.......

In the Mojave where it is not likely to rain ...... has happened, but
unusual..... more likely to have heavy winds ....

Joyce,
I am sure that all our thoughts are with you. The fires might make
beautiful photographs (I love to photograph flames, they are so alive), but
the destruction is terrible. I was so glad to hear in your earlier post
that no one had been killed, but the property destruction must be
devastating. Keeping my fingers crossed that seventeen miles is as near as
the fires will get. Take care.

All the best.
