epsom salts ?

we were having a strontium glaze settle to rock hard
in the bucket. i searched through the archives and
started with adding bentonite, still settled. i,
then, added epsom salts. this seemed to alleviate the
problem. when fired some of the small bowls had that
shiny surface on the unglazed portion of the foot that
one sees in salt firing. there was also some running
onto the shelves and i am suspecting that was caused
by the thicker application allowed by the glaze
staying in suspension.
i don't recall the amount of epsom salts used, but it
seemed to be the agreed amount in the archives. only
a small percentage of the pots with this glaze had the
shiny feet. was this caused by epsom salts? is this
bad for the kiln? something better than epsom salts
to use? what do you think?
thanks ginnyB on orcas island where the sun has
been shining and the gardens a growing.
