One of the suggestions given for softening clay for throwing (in lieu of a
pugmill), was to freeze the clay. The suggestion came from someone who used
it successfully with porcelain. Others said that frozen clay was a disaster
for them. Well nothing ventured, etc.

After a week in the freezer, I removed my midrange stoneware and thawed.
Unfortunately, my experience came in the disaster range. It made the clay
nice and soft, BUT it cracked and split the block of clay in rings all the
way through. Even after wedging, it had small air pockets through out. It
also seemed to bring the grog to the surface during throwing. Too bad. It
would have been an easy solution. Again the thing that worked best for me
was wrapping the block of clay in a soaking wet bath towel and returning to
the bag for 24 hours.
